Drowsy Driving - 944 Words

SLEEP DEPRIVATION DRIVING Nothing could prepare me for the news I received six years ago about the unexpected death of my close friend Joey. I will never forget the night he died. How I had been with him just minutes before, and how his death was totally unnecessary and preventable. A few weeks before Christmas in 2001, Joey, myself and a few of my other co-workers were closing down the local restaurant we worked at while attending Umass Lowell. It had been a busy night, and we didnt end up finishing work until 1am. Having worked all day, we were all extremely tired, and could not wait to go home. Most of us were staying in Lowell at the time, but Joey had chosen to commute to campus and therefore had to travel out to Reading. I†¦show more content†¦On a more positive note, gains are being made towards the direction of holding those presumed guilty of drowsy driving accountable for their reckless behavior. Unfortunately, it has taken a series of deaths in order to trigger this movement. One of the first laws developed (Maggies Law,) was done so by the mother of 20 year old Maggie McDonnell who was hit head-on by a van driven by a drowsy driver in 1997. Mrs. McDonnell (the mother of Maggie,) was infuriated to learn that there was not a single law created to address the issue of vehicular homicide as a result of sleep deprivation, and therefore set forth to create one. Her efforts were successful, and in 2003 the nations first drowsy driving law was implemented. Maggies Law ammends the spectrum of vehicular homicide to include those who who operarte a vehicle while sleep deprived. Under Maggies Law, offenders can be prosecuted if there is proof beyond a doubt that the operator fell asleep while driving, or was awake for more than 24 consecutive hours. Conviction under this law can carry a maximum penalty of ten years in prison. (Weaver 1). As a future sleep technician, and a person who has suffered personally from the aftermath of a friend falling asleep at the wheel, the topic of drowsy driving is one concerns me. The Organizational Systems And Process Analysis Part Of...

Phase 1 Phase 1 consisted of the organizational systems and process analysis part of the project. During this phase the project, we held various meetings to discuss workload, roles, and timelines to finish Phase 1. We met with Stacy for a 1:1 description of the culture training program and what JustSave was trying to accomplish with it. In addition, we held a focus group at JustSave stores to get a better understanding of the systems in place in the areas of opportunity to focus on moving forward in the project. We did several things wellness part of the project including: delegating roles based on our personal strengths, keeping our work ahead of schedule using our timeline, pulling information from various class resources on conducting†¦show more content†¦Despite doing so many things well, I believe we could have improved the project early on by tackling several weaknesses that were pervasive throughout Phase 1-3. For instance, very early on there was disagreement on the focus of the process maps. This disagreement was between focusing on the culture training itself or the manifestation of culture within the JustSave stores. This disagreement over focus caused our early process maps to delay the progress of Phase 1 and the redrawing of several process maps over a period of time until we could come to an agreement. Our focus group was also impeded due to the lack of input over the questions that were to be asked and our inability to maintain the conversation to the scope of our project rather than the minute details that we would not be able to change in the stores. This cost us a valuable 30 to 45 minutes in focus group time as we would’ve been able to focus more on the underlying processes rather than particular aspects of a single JustSave store. If I were to go back and redo our initial focus group, I would have scheduled 1 to 2 more meetings with our project group to narrow down our scope and focus so that we could of been more efficient and effective with our time. The best solution would be buying an old phone off customers for a small price and recycle some parts of the phone to recover the materials which can be used for producing new models. The Research ; Development department should also focus on innovation regarding the new energy sources, for example, solar power. To my surprise I learnt that Nokia already has been testing the Portable Solar Charger as a charging opportunities for people that want to use Nokia smartphones but do not have access to the electricity. Furthermore, in 2006 Nokia introduced small packaging which is easier to recycle. Lighter packaging also reduced transportation costs. In my opinion, Nokia should still work on reducing the use of paper and plastic in the packaging. Promotion Nokia promotes its products as eco-friendly in the mobile phone market. The company also raises awareness about environmental issues, education. The perfect way of promoting the company with sustainable values in the world is to improve access to information and communication technologies (ICT) in dev eloping countries. This would bring benefits to people who are unable to access these technologies for financial or geographical reasons. The company should offer affordable mobile products and services to help people develop business and employment opportunities all over the world. Nokia has already done it, as it collaborates with UNESCO’s Education for All and uses the mobile technology to develop mobile educational products such as Nokia Education Delivery, Nokia Life and Nokia mobile mathematics. Nokia Education Delivery uses mobile technology to deliver quality education materials to remote, hard-to-reach areas so teachers and trainers can access and download videos and other educational resources. Pricing: To be more competitive in the fast growing market of smartphones Nokia should keep their prices low and affordable for everyone with keeping the high quality standard of the products. Nokia already has lowered the cost of packaging and transport of products by reducing size and use of paper, this should have a reflection in the phone prices as well. In my opinion, Nokia should make a packages even smaller without unnecessary use of plastic covers and paper in them. All the information about the phone should be available on a website after registering or entering the serial codes together with users’ guide. Furthermore, to appear more ecological friendly Nokia should buy off the customers the old phones which can be recycled by the company again. This way customers feel like being a Nokia’s customer is profitable, taking care of environment as well. Customers receive a high standard product for a good price and in addition they are also paid for returning the old phone. 3. Research and Development: Nokia research and develop team focus on solutions that enhance the energy efficiency in the products.
